Trump and Putin plan to meet in Alaska to discuss a peace agreement in Ukraine

Washington - ALsharqiya, August 9: US President Donald Trump said he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine on August 15 in Alaska. Trump made the remarks on social media Friday after saying the parties, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, were close to a ceasefire agreement that would end the three-and-a-half-year conflict, which could require Ukraine to cede significant territory.

Trump, speaking to reporters at the White House on Monday, suggested an agreement that would include a land swap. "There will be an exchange of territory to improve the lot of both sides," he said. But Zelenskyy said Saturday that Ukraine could not violate its constitution by taking action regarding its territory, explaining that "Ukrainians will not give up their land to occupiers."

The Kremlin also confirmed plans for the summit in a statement posted online. Putin aide Yuri Ushakov said the two leaders "will focus on discussing options for a long-term, peaceful solution to the Ukrainian crisis." "It is clear that this process will be difficult, but we will participate in it actively and energetically," he added.
