France-Alsharqiya September 14: The home of French artist Serge Gainsbourg in Paris will soon be opened to the public, to celebrate the career and life of the legendary musician and singer, who constitutes one of the most important names in the field of music in France in the twentieth century.
Since his death in 1991, his home in the French capital's very chic 6th district has attracted countless admirers, who come to admire the facade covered in graffiti.
But the house has always remained closed to the public, and only the family and a few celebrities, including fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, have been able to enter the site, which has been transformed into something like a monument in memory of Gainsbourg, who inspired generations of artists in France and abroad.
From September 20, the venue will open its doors to the curious, who will be guided by the voice of his daughter, Charlotte Gainsbourg, via an audio guide. Except for the glass panels that prevent visitors from touching the assets, the house has remained as it has been since 1991.
In the living room, a black piano can be seen, the color of the walls and ceilings, golden records, and pictures of the women who accompanied Serge Gainsbourg's life, from Brigitte Bardot to Jane Birkin, who recently died.
Charlotte Gainsbourg told a number of journalists yesterday, Wednesday: “Soon after his death, I did not want to move anything from its place, and I immediately spoke about opening a museum, because he himself spoke about that.” Charlotte hesitated for a long time about the idea of opening the place where she grew up and her father died to the public.
She added: “There were moments full of doubt, when I lost confidence, and I did not want anyone to enter” the house.
Close to the house, on the same Rue de Verneuil, a museum dedicated to Gainsbourg will also open its doors and will allow the display of pieces that, due to space constraints, were not visible in the house, where the artist, who was fond of collecting, accumulated quantities of jewelry. It is expected that the place will attract about one hundred thousand visitors annually.
