Baghdad - Al-Sharqiya, August 8: Today, broad Iraqi circles commemorated the end of the Iran-Iraq war thirty-seven years ago, which was the longest war of the twentieth century. On this day, August 8, 1988, the United Nations announced the agreement of Iraq and Iran to cease military operations between them in accordance with Security Council Resolution 598 of 1987, which included conducting direct talks between them to end all outstanding problems, exchange prisoners, and non-interference by either party in the internal affairs of the other. Widespread celebrations took place in Iraq in Baghdad and the provinces to celebrate the cessation of the war and the return of fighters from the battlefronts and prisoners from both sides to their families and relatives.
