Syrian Energy Minister Mohammed al-Bashir visits Iraq

Baghdad - ALsharqiya, August 12: Syrian Energy Minister Mohammed al-Bashir stressed the importance of linking oil pipelines between Syria and Iraq to enhance economic cooperation, indicating that the old oil pipeline between Kirkuk and Baniyas Port has reached the end of its useful life and needs a comprehensive evaluation. This came during his visit to Baghdad and his meeting with his Iraqi counterpart, Hayan Abdul Ghani. SANA reported that al-Bashir reviewed the energy situation in Syria and confirmed that his country imports about 3 million barrels of crude oil per month, in addition to local production to meet citizens’ needs for petroleum derivatives. He pointed out that the pumping stations along the Syrian-Iraqi oil pipeline are almost destroyed and need comprehensive rehabilitation, in addition to the electrical infrastructure and civil works. The two sides also discussed a project to extend optical cables parallel to the oil pipelines and connect them with Lebanon.
