Statement from 26 countries: Peace must protect Ukrainian and European interests

Brussels - Al Sharqiya, August 12: Twenty-six European heads of state and government said that Ukrainians must be free to determine their future and that a diplomatic solution must protect Ukrainian and European interests. The statement by the heads of state stressed that meaningful negotiations can only take place in the context of a ceasefire or a reduction in hostilities, and said that everyone shares the conviction that a diplomatic solution must protect the vital security interests of Ukraine and Europe. The leaders of all EU countries, except Hungary, endorsed the statement, which was agreed upon late Monday night and published Tuesday morning.
