Iraq faces the threat of water scarcity

Baghdad - Al-Sharqiya, August 11: The Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture announced that Iraq has shifted from a phase of water scarcity to water scarcity, expecting a reduction in the agricultural plan for wheat and barley. A statement from the ministry said that Iraq is facing danger, as water reserves have decreased to less than 10 billion cubic meters in conjunction with the years of drought, and that it was decided to ban the cultivation of rice, while approving the cultivation of 200 dunums for the purpose of preserving the sustainability of varieties. The ministry’s statement suggests that the winter agricultural plan will be reduced, especially with regard to the cultivation of wheat and barley, and that their cultivation will be limited to river water using modern irrigation techniques.
