Versace's ready-to-wear collection for the upcoming spring and summer was characterized by the presence of square shapes in designs and prints, while its focus on pastel colors was to add touches of softness to looks that had a refreshing and modern character.
When preparing this collection, Donatella searched for sources of inspiration in the house’s archives, specifically in the Versace Fall 1995 and Atelier Versace Spring 1995 collections, where she was drawn to a photo of the famous model Claudia Schiffer in a look decorated with blue and green checkerboard squares. This checkered print has been one of the most prominent symbols since its adoption in 1992, and it is still present in the house’s collections until now. The most prominent features of this collection were evident in the printed silk designs and dresses made of mesh lace, one of which was worn by the “supermodel” Claudia Schiffer in the final look of this year. The show also repeatedly featured “prince jackets” with broad shoulders in men’s looks. It was inspired by the jackets previously made for the late rapper Prince, which he appeared with during a concert tour he undertook in 1991.
It was noteworthy that the new Versace designs moved towards a more youthful and exotic style away from its traditional designs, as it embraced square patterns and calm colors, but without abandoning the iconic touches for which this luxury Italian house is known.
