Basra - Al Sharqiya, August 4: The increasing salinity in the Shatt al-Arab has forced dozens of farmers in Basra to abandon their agricultural lands and move to the desert areas west of the governorate, where groundwater is available. Farmers said that the tide and salt in general have weakened palm tree cultivation in Abu al-Khaseeb, stressing that palm trees are no longer cultivated as intensively as in the past, as the number of palm trees has decreased in Basra overall.
