Conflicting theories about artificial consciousness.. Do robots feel pain?

London - ALsharqiya November 19: A British expert has warned of major "social ruptures" that will soon result from many people becoming immersed in artificial intelligence systems, while others cling to the theory that the technology is incapable of any real communication. Professor of Philosophy at the London School of Economics, Professor Jonathan Birch, predicted that "the dawn of consciousness in artificial intelligence systems will emerge by 2035."

According to the British newspaper "The Guardian", his statement came on the eve of the preparation of world governments to meet in the American city of San Francisco this week to discuss setting laws and protection barriers against the risks of artificial intelligence. Awareness of artificial intelligence During the past week, some academics and experts considered that artificial intelligence should have rights similar to those of humans and animals. This matter was strongly opposed by Professor Birch, expressing his concern about this type of thinking. He stressed that this technology, no matter how advanced, will remain incapable of feeling natural feelings such as pain and joy, stressing that artificial intelligence companies only seek to ensure their rights and profitability, and in doing so they are causing the creation of a new form of "conscious existence" that may harm humans.

One way to gauge the level of consciousness of AI, he suggested, would be to follow the labeling system used to guide animal policy—an octopus, for example, is more conscious than a snail or clam. Any assessment would effectively ask whether a chatbot on a cellphone is capable of feeling sadness or joy, or whether robots programmed to do housework suffer if they are not treated well.
